There have been a lot of great comedians on Saturday Night Live. Some faded away and were never to be heard from again, some had failed attempts in the movies, others had great success in the movies, and unfortunately, a few of them have passed away at an early age. Chris Farley falls into the latter two categories. He had great success in the movies – depending on who you talk to – and passed away early. One thing that cannot be argued is that Chris Farley commanded attention. When he’s in a scene, he’s ever-present. There are only a few actors that have this ability.
I was looking for movies on DIRECT TV the other night and came across Tommy Boy. This is my favorite Chris Farley movie, and one that I could watch over and over again. David Spade is the perfect counterpart for Chris Farley. The dynamic between the two of them is hilarious. It starts off rough, but they become good friends as the movie goes on. One of the funniest scenes is when Farley goes out for a pizza and Spade watches a beautiful woman disrobe and go for a swim in the pool. When Farley returns, the banter is hilarious. The car scene was also a classic, one that lives in comedic lore.
The movie is about Tommy Callahan (Farley) having to take over his dad’s business unexpectedly when his father passes away from a heart attack. He travels the country trying to sell brake pads, but doesn’t have much luck. He also doesn’t realize the company is being sabotaged by his new ‘relatives.’ Tommy has an epiphany while ordering chicken wings at a diner and everything changes. He begins selling. This turns him into a genius and he’s ready to turn the company around.
If you’re looking to relax and have a few lighthearted laughs, Tommy Boy should definitely be considered.
